Medical Director

I grew up in San Diego and attended the University of California, San Diego, Revelle College and graduated in 1991 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Biochemistry and Cell Biology. I had a short stint in cancer research and monoclonal antibody research, and then went on to St. George’s University School of Medicine. After completing two years of basic sciences in Grenada, West Indies, I returned to the States to do my clinical rotations in hospitals in Oakland, CA, Brooklyn, NY, Mt. Vernon, NY, Long Island and Phoenix, AZ. After graduating with an M.D. in 1996, I began my residency in Family Practice at Mid-Hudson Family Health Institute in Kingston, NY. In 1999, I completed my residency and received a research award in Diabetes Management. I obtained my board certification with the American Board of Family Practice in July 1999 and have recertified in June of 2006, and I currently practice in Chandler, AZ.

I am a Clinical Assistant Professor in Family and Community Medicine at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center Phoenix Campus. I had also served as State Chair of the Arizona Caucus of the American Medical Association-Organized Medical Staff Section. I have introduced resolutions meant to change the way physicians practice in an increasingly bureaucratic healthcare environment. I have also appeared on local network television and speak publicly often to help educate the public on healthcare issues.

I awarded the title of Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians in 2004. This title honors those who have put in the extra dedication in being educated and educating others in Family Medicine.

I am an active member of the American Academy of Family Physicians. I am also a member of the Arizona Medical Association and Arizona Academy of Family Physicians. I currently have privileges at Banner Desert Medical Center.

I feel that medical care is meant for the patient’s well-being only–not that of stockholders or CEO’s. In fact, I think that for-profit health insurance which is owned by stockholders is a complete violation of the physician-patient privilege as it introduces a non-involved third party into your well-being.

I believe in the Physician-Patient relationship as something sacred–if a test is agreed upon, the test should be done with no insurance company interference. If palliative care is in order, then we discuss the options in detail.

I live in Chandler, AZ with my wife and two boys. Theresa is a registered nurse with experience in oncology, post-operative recovery, surgical and medical intensive care, and outpatient clinical care.

I am a former volunteer for the Phoenix Police Department, as a member of their Special Assignments Unit (the Phoenix PD version of SWAT). I was a tactical physician, aiding the tactical teams during raids and barricades. I had to resign my position on the team due to a leg injury. It was an absolute pleasure working with the hard working and dedicated men and women of the Phoenix Police Department, and I will miss the teams I came to work with.

Physician Assistant, Co-Owner

I am originally from the state of Pennsylvania. I grew up in a small rural community called Coopersburg where my father was the town physician. I have lived in Arizona since 1982. After transferring from the University of Illinois, I attended ASU on a full music scholarship. My degrees are in Euphonium Performance and Music Education. I taught instrumental music to elementary and junior high students in the Madison School District for six years. During my tenure my students won numerous awards and participated in competitions in Arizona and California. I was honored to be selected Teacher of the Year for my school district and was nominated Arizona State Educator of The Year in 1991 for all disciplines. In 1992 I decided to resign from my position to pursue a passion of mine—medicine.

I volunteered at Maricopa Medical Center and was eventually hired as a Physical Therapy Technician. While taking my prerequisite courses at ASU and Grand Canyon University I gained valuable experience in rehabilitation and wound care. I was very fortunate to spend much of my time working in the Burn Center and doing inpatient and outpatient orthopedics. In 1995 I was accepted into the inaugural Physician Assistant Program at the Arizona Center of Health Sciences.

I completed all my training in the state of Arizona. I have experience in Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Emergency Medicine, but I emphasized Family Medicine and Urgent Care in my elective rotations and preceptorships. I graduated in 1997 and worked at a family practice in Tempe. I accepted a position with Medpro in 1998 and have worked with Dr. Carroll since August 1999.

I am board-certified through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and am a fellow member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA). I also have membership with Arizona State Association of Physician Assistants (ASAPA).

I share a similar philosophy with Dr. Carroll in that the patient’s needs come first. Patients need to be able to partner with their healthcare provider concerning their health issues, not with an HMO, insurance company, or any other entity. Patients need providers that are able and willing to listen, communicate well and spend quality time to assure all of their concerns are adequately addressed. I feel strongly that we will provide a service that brings medicine and care back to the individual. This is why I am very honored to be a part of Renaissance.

My husband Tony and I have lived in Chandler since 1997. Tony is a senior civil engineer specializing in water resources. We enjoy sailing and other outdoor activities with our family, friends, and our Old English Sheepdog Abby.

Physician Assistant

Born in New York, I moved to Arizona when I was 7 years old. I grew up in the town of Gilbert and graduated from Gilbert High School in 2004. While growing up, my parents owned a restaurant in Mesa, AZ where I “worked” from the time I was in 2nd grade. By being a part of the family business from the time I was young, I learned the importance of relationships. I developed bonds with people of all ages who I knew from elementary school to college graduation. Having this experience has naturally brought me to family practice, where I get to see patients at all stages of life and get to truly know and treat them, instead of just treating their symptoms.

I went to the University of Arizona for my undergraduate degree where I majored in communication and minored in business administration. After taking a health care communication class and examining interactions between doctors and patients, both good and bad, I decided I wanted to be a part of the healthcare field as a Physician Assistant and began pursuing this career path. In 2006, I started working at St. Mary’s Hospital in Tucson, AZ as a patient care technician. I moved back to Gilbert in 2007 and worked at Scottsdale Shea Hospital’s Endoscopy Department before being accepted into the physician assistant master’s degree program at A.T. Still University in 2008.

During my time at A.T. Still University, I served as a board member of the Arizona State Association of Physician Assistants. I was also an active member in the Dr. Louis J. Kettle Student Society and the American Academy of Physician Assistants. I have enjoyed opportunities to volunteer at community health fairs which helped those with limited access to healthcare.

I was married in March of 2010. My husband, Josh, and I currently reside in Ahwatukee with our 2 cats, Boris and Baby, and with our newborn boy. In my spare time, I love hiking, bike riding, and reading. I hope to become more involved in my community as I grow in this profession.
